Lift Truck Components in More Detail
A forklift is made of many parts. The key parts which make up a forklift truck are the truck frame, the engine components, the overhead guard, the tilt cylinders and the wheels. Furthermore, a forklift has a range of attachments. All the components that make up a lift truck are of equal importance because they work together to make the operation of the equipment possible. The next paragraphs describe in detail several of the forklift components.
The Overhead Guard - this guard forms the forklift truck's metal roof. It sits over the cab area and protects the machinery operator while she or he is sitting and driving. The overhead guard ensures that nothing falling from above onto the truck would hurt the driver or damage the controls in the cab. The overhead guard is essential to the frame assembly on some units.
The Mast - Mounted either to the forklift frame or the front axle, the mast is the vertical forklift component made of interlocking rails. The mast enables the forks to move up and downwards while providing lateral stability. The interlocking rails may either have bushings or bushings as guides. There are two ways the mast may be operated: hydraulically by one or more hydraulic cylinders or chain operated with motive power provided by a hydraulic motor.
Forklift Carriage - the forks and various other attachments are mounted to the carriage. The carriage is connected to the mast directly to the hydraulic cylinder or it is connected by chains. In order to enable the forks to be raised and lowered, the carriage may have either rollers or bushings to guide it in the interlocking mast rails.
Load Back Rest - While the carriage is raised to full height, there is a back rest made of metal which prevents a load from falling backwards. The back rest is either bolted or welded on to the carriage.
Forklift Attachments - a variety of attachments may be fixed to the front of the lift truck. The most common attachment is forks. Additionally, there are L-shaped members, rollers, rotators, roll clamps, pole handlers and and all that. These different attachments are very handy for transporting different types of loads.
